Weekly Update

We have had a great week! The girls have enjoyed starting their day with swimming. Due to schedule conflicts next week, the girls will only have swimming on Tuesday and Thursday. I am sorry about this change but this is a busy time of year with Halloween on Monday and the St. Catherine's Day chapel on Wednesday!

The grade level has just finished our second week of Book Clubs. On our class blog, there is a page on the top called Book Clubs and each reading teacher has a link to a page. The reading teachers will update this page monthly with updates about what has been happening in their Book Club. Feel free to take a look!

This week, the girls practiced narrative writing by creating a story about a witch casting a spell on them. They took a before and after picture using Photo Booth and the after picture included some sort of effect. Their creativity is shining in their writing and I look forward to sending this home in the next few weeks.

For practice applying their spelling words, the girls completed another round of Spelling and Me with their current word list. They are writing so much that they need numerous slides. Here it is:

I am sending home Friday Folders today and it includes lots of work, including their chapter 2 math assessment. We have jumped into the next chapter that focuses on multiplication, division, factors, multiples, and prime and composite numbers.

Many specials teachers have updated their page on SeeSaw with their monthly update so I hope you will take a few minutes to see what your daughters have been working on in those classes.

Weekly Update

I have enjoyed meeting with so many of you already and look forward to the rest of the conferences tomorrow and next week. Because I have been conducting conferences, this will be a brief blog post.

The main thing to note is that swimming starts Monday! The letter from the PE department is here. Please send extra snack because the girls are going to be extra hungry! Please note, the girls will NOT swim on Halloween.

Due to the short week, I will not be sing home Friday folders but will have lots to send home next Friday.

Weekly Update

This has been another great week. We are in full Halloween mode in our class and doing different activities to celebrate this fun time of year. On the actual day, the girls may wear a costume to school and Dr. Kapetanis will be sending an email with the details. We have our grade level Halloween Party on that Monday from 1:40 - 2:40. The girls will travel through each fourth grade classroom for a different activity or a snack. Thank you to the parent volunteers for helping to make this happen.

Math: Speaking of Halloween, I have offered all of the class a Halloween challenge that is due by November 2. There is a link on the blog and I am also sending a hard copy of the game board home. I look forward to seeing which students will take advantage of this opportunity! We have finished chapter 2 in math and will have a brief quiz on the material on Wednesday. Our next unit is on multiplication and division and you can see the homelink here. I am also sending a hard copy of the homelink in today's Friday Folder.

Reading: We finished James and the Giant Peach and it was a fabulous class novel. As a culmination project, the girls are designing a front page of a newspaper showing their favorite scene. We started these today and will continue them next week.

On Monday, we are beginning Book Club Literacy Groups in the fourth grade. In today's Friday Folder, there is a letter with more details and it also lists who their teacher will be. We look forward to starting this next week.

I look forward to meeting with you for Parent Teacher Conferences next week!

Weekly Update

The girls worked hard this week and we covered a lot of material. I hope everyone has a great, three day weekend. Here are some curriculum updates and reminders:

Math:  We have moved quickly through the second chapter in math since the girls have a strong understanding of adding and subtracting larger numbers. Next week, we will work through a few more skills before assessing.

This week, I introduced a fun activity called a Musical Moment. In this activity, the girls listen to a song and every time they hear a selected word, they make a tally mark. They then take the tally count as work through different calculations. Here is the one we completed this week.

Language Arts: While continuing to read James and the Giant Peach, the girls searched for common and proper nouns as well as powerful verbs. This activity was harder for them than I anticipated so we will continue working with these parts of speech as well additional ones.

The girls completed their first Spelling and Me activity, which they loved. This is a creative writing activity that can be used with any spelling list. Here is a slideshow of their great writing.

For our writing lab this week, we did another activity that the girls loved called eyebombing. Their job was to place two googly eyes on an inanimate object around the school. Then, they took a picture of it and wrote from the perspective of their object. They were incredibly enthusiastic over this and their writing reflected this.

Social Studies: We discussed the three branches of the government and why they exist. Next, they will make their own diagram and then we will move into researching a president.
